For a second, I thought I was actually seeing and hearing things.

My DVD box set of every Sailor Moon episode ever came in the mail today, and I just watched episode four. The episode begins with Usagi (Sailor Moon) weighing herself and then breaking down into tears, and declaring she is fat and needs to go on a diet. The rest of the episode follows her starving and doing ridiculous workouts at a gym that promises you will lose 5 kilos in 3 days.

I'm not even kidding. This progresses the end of the episode, where Sailor Moon makes the following quote while fighting the bad guys:
"A GIRL WHO WANTS TO LOSE WEIGHT IS STRONGER THAN ANYONE!"

Here's the episode: (or you can watch it here)

I cannot imagine how this ever got aired in the States. At least not with that dialogue. I must watch the English version and see if they changed anything...

  2. I have those same box sets. My life for a long time revolved around Sailor Moon. That was even my first website back in the day. You've inspired me to watch them on my blu-ray/hd tv and watch Darien (the original Edward) in large glory.

I will pay particular attention to this episode. I watched it so long ago I do not even remember. Now to go look for my beautiful blue Sailor Moon box sets.

  3. Ahaha...yeah, I remember this episode. I thought it was hilarious way back when.

Some stuff got changed in the english version, but I think not much since the whole episode's animation clearly involves sight gags.

I think I remember being weirded out by the fact that in the Japanese version of the show Sailors Neptune and Uranus were definitely lesbian, but in the english they were "cousins."

Everytime I watched the english version, I would think of incestuous appalachian inbred blue people...Good times.
