It's insane how
much rubbish you can accumulate in less than two years. Someone gives you
something you don't really need or want, but you take it because hey you don't
turn down a gift from a friend. You bring it home and you toss it on your desk
or your dresser or on the counter or in the closet. After some time goes by,
you have accumulated lots and lots of ..
...I don't know how to spell the Irish word for knickknack (pronounced
die-sheen, RUBY HELP ME OUT HERE), but yeah things from friends and family that
you don't want or need, but now it's time to pack up your shite and move and
you've got a ton of crap to get rid of.
Some of you have
been with me long enough to remember my older hoarding habits. The fleas in the old apartment mostly cured the hoarding tendencies, but I've still
amassed a couple small mountains of stuff I really don't want.
So far I have
managed to box up about 50% of the stuff on my desk (and like 50% got thrown
out). I have until next Friday to pack up the rest of my belongings.
Now that my
living space has filled with boxes, the Simple Cat's level of
Concern is at its peak.
Harleyquinn, on
the other hand, does not care in the slightest. Yesterday when one of the
movers came to give me an estimate (a reasonable one, finally), HQ followed him
around like some kind of supervisor. She does that with anyone who comes to the
house--plumbers, the cable guy, Mumsy's cleaning lady. She's also the only cat
I've ever met who goes running TO the door when strangers come over instead of
running away to hide under a bed.

I can so relate. We did the same thing and moved stuff that needed to be regifted or tossed. Probably tossed. Much of that is gone now. We're trying very hard to downsize on the clutter. It's a battle.

ReplyDeleteI think one of the only good things that comes from moving is that it forces us to throw out all the crap we don't need or use. If we didn't move, that stuff would just forever pile up.

I'm starting to wonder if my family just made it up. Even my mother and aunts don't know how to spell 'die-sheen'; I asked all of them. All agree on the pronunciation, but no can even guess at the spelling...

ReplyDeleteaye. i think i'm still terrified of that post. i'm going to click on it anyway but i'm sure first i've laid eyes on it, i've had a mild heart attack. oh God, it's even worse than i remember (no offence to you, Mich.) i will sit in your room for a whole of 5 minutes (take this as a high compliment.)

ReplyDeleteMaybe deasagáin is the word I was thinking of? Or a variant of it maybe. It's definitely pronounced die-sheen, but even mumsy doesn't know how to spell it. It's one of those words that I guess doesn't have a literal translation and was only ever used as slang.

ReplyDeleteI've moved so many times that I learned early not to accumulate stuff. I give away clothes and other useful items, throw out stuff, set stuff out at the curb in case someone wants it. I've learned not to be sentimental about things. If I care, it hurts too much when I can't keep what I want.

ReplyDeleteMoving is the worst... but it IS a good time to weed out all your crap. It's a simple yes/no process: "Do I really want to move this stuff to another place?"

Yes. A million times yes. I just moved in March to the city forty-five minutes over and I swear all I can think about every time is how much bs has amassed. I go on a goodwill donation frenzy. There's also this issue where I'm sentimental so I save notes and such and I'll find a little tin with all these little photos and ticket stubs etc saved and I think to myself, well, if that person or friend is no longer around then I don't need it, right? But it's harder for me to get rid of those. And clothes. You may need them! No, you won't, you haven't worn them in a year or more and so I part with them but it's a freaking circus in my brain lol. ReplyDeleteI moved in June/July of last year and the apartment is already full of junk. Even though I'd gone on a massive purge of items prior to moving and had really only brought the essentials with me.

Kadie sometimes goes to the door when strangers show up. She even greets me sometimes. It's pretty rare though. I think she does it in the hopes that a feeding is coming. I'm a huge hoarder. I couldn't begin to imagine the stress that moving out would cause me.

ReplyDeleteMy cat thinks she's supervisor too. She's encountered many police officers who've...stopped..by...ANYWAYS she circles them. Along with any plumbers, etc...In smoke circles, she finds a seat and joins. When she's had enough she will go to her kitty condo and look at the outside world with high kitten dreams. Haha.

ReplyDeleteI always try to keep my things as tidy and organized as possible (I've become quite fond of my shredder.) However, the downstairs is a filthy disaster. The girls leave their Shopkins on the floor of every room. D leaves her papers and boxes and purchases all over the place and she never seems to have the time to clean up even though she only works 3 days a week. I keep saying we'll do spring cleaning on a weekend but we've always got other plans.
Hope you've found time to consolidate your "die-sheen" and discard an appropriate amount. Best of luck with the moving and packing, and Congrats on your new home!
