In a fit of wild
optimism, I recently went and purchased myself a left-handed mandolin.
I've gotten
fairly decent at the upright bass in a pretty short amount of time, and I'm
teaching myself. Since everyone insisted that playing the upright would be nigh
impossible, I presumed that since I found it much easier than I thought I
would, then I could totally teach myself anything with strings.
you guys
I don't think I
like the mandolin.
Going from
playing a regular bass guitar--which is pretty large--and another bass that is
six feet tall, holding this thing feels absolutely absurd. It feels like it was made for a very small child. Also the freaking thing goes out of tune if I look at it wrong.

he'd give me a crash course in mandolin basics, so we shall see how I do.
Lil Bro#1
learned the mandolin four years ago. And by ~"learned"~ I mean he
picked up the mandolin he borrowed from his friend, googled how to tune it,
tuned it by ear, and then approximately 90 seconds later played a piece of
Vivaldi's music perfectly. From memory.
Lil Bro#2 and I
want to set up a youtube channel wherein we blindfold Lil Bro#1 and hand him
random instruments, and then take bets on how fast he can master them.

I wonder if I might hire you to do post titles for me... I won't ask you to play...
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how music seems to come so easy to some people. I've been working on the guitar now for almost a year and still sometimes get my fingers stuck between the D and the G string.
ReplyDeleteI love the mandolin is it limited to bluegrass music? I would like to try it someday.
"Also the freaking thing goes out of tune if I look at it wrong." this one earned a very amusing and idiotic smile from me.

I'm just average at anything musical.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fantastic that you play these instruments. I can only manage the kazoo.
ReplyDeleteAnd not very well at that.
"Does he have proof to back up his claims of being the "top student"?" well, i believe the proof is in the pud. the man is successful as hell, in a pretty narrow field and does brain surgery. thus, i am inclined to believe the top student malarkey, especially when he spews out proper percentages and so on and so forth. though the aunt says, "medicine was easy back then". Percy doesn't actually believe that however as medicine hasn't changed in so long i could've gone back to his time and they'd still be asking the same questions as they do today.
ReplyDeleteoh that's so hot. honestly, it's similar around here, but i'm the most neurotic individual i've ever had the pleasure of knowing. i'd always want the top marks, and the stupid thing is that i have a scholarship and because of said scholarship, this means that i am GUARANTEED a job afterwards because i am being paid off a hospital here. i intern there and they send me out for training depending on stuff. so yeah, i just want shiny grades.
"It's crazy how you can walk away from an accident when the car is completely demolished." i know right...really makes think that you're underestimating the human body whereas i try not to kill myself when given a very, very hot kettle.

Was your upright strung for a right-handed person? I never considered it before this, but I guess it could be strung either way. For what it's worth, MY WIFE bought me a ukelele for Christmas one year and I couldn't keep the thing in tune for any appreciable length of time. I tend to think it's because it wasn't made well, and maybe that's the problem with your mandolin?
ReplyDeleteI should have prefaced everything by saying I play the bass guitar and have done so for over 35 years. I'm proficient on six-string guitar, piano and drums, and can pick up just about anything and fake it for a song or two. But the Uke beat the shit out of me.
ReplyDeleteMy uncle's like lil bro #1, he can play anything within minutes (he recently bought an ukulele). I can't even play spoons. Hell, I can't even play normal.
ReplyDeleteThat would be an interesting thing to see on youtube from you.... actually, I have seen youtube videos of you from your past posts....
ReplyDeleteWouldn't you need to be living in a trailer park in South Carolina's country side in order to fully perfect the art with this instrument? Along with some moonshine?
I LOVE Losing My Religion and thought it'd be fun to play. I have VERY small hands... I play a child version of an electric guitar. Maybe I should try it. Are they expensive?
ReplyDeleteOh cool you are left handed too?
ReplyDeleteSo am I
Aka south paw
Aka kithog (Irish for left handed)
If you made that YouTube video
I would watch it like a billion times
Xxxxxxx
When it comes to music I'm pretty terrible. I tried learning the guitar, but just never could get it. Some things click, and some don't. Instruments don't. However, if I was going to learn a tiny instrument, I think I'd lean toward the ukelele. I'm not sure why.
ReplyDeleteLol... you're too funny. I know someone like your brother and it just makes me want to burn anything I tried to be good at because I was no protege. Good luck!
