things and stuffs

Anyone else having an issue with blogs loading? Like every other blog I try to look at takes ten years to load or doesn't load at all.....

I did not get the apartment. Did extreme research before committing to anything, which included interrogating the other tenants about everything from the nearest neighbours to the utilities.

The utilities stopped me. The apartment is heated with propane. I knew propane was the most expensive method of heating but holy hand grenades I never thought it would cost as much as the other tenants are paying. The one lady I spoke to said on average the propane costs $200 a month. Up to $400 in the winter.


Yeah so I can't afford that. I shall continue house-hunting. 

Anyone else doing the A-Z blog thing in April? I was going to, but I have run out of time. So the MS paint Bible stories as told by Mich shall have to wait until next year. Or maybe I'll just get bored and post them anyway when I finish them.....

AND NOW FOR AN EASTER RECIPE.

Mumsy pulled this one out of nowhere and baked a trial run last night. I have tasted few things as glorious as this recipe, which is apparently a traditional British dish. Last night was the first time I ever even heard of it, and I feel like I have been thoroughly deprived for the past 30 years of my life. 

I also don't know how I never thought of this on my own. Because it is genius. 

Egg and Bacon Pie. 


It's as delicious as it sounds, even if I can't take appetizing photos of it. So here is my grandmother's recipe. It is extremely easy to make.

You will need:
- pie crust (I am awful at making my own pie crusts, so I usually go with the pre-made ones from the supermarket)
- 1 small onion, minced
- 1 lb. bacon, chopped into small pieces
- 4 eggs
- salt and pepper to taste

Granny makes this a bit differently than the *traditional* English Egg & Bacon pie. To make her version:
- Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees F (~200 C).
- Line your pie dish with the pie crust, and then layer the minced onion on the bottom. 
- Layer the chopped bacon over the onion. 
- Whisk the 4 eggs in a mixing bowl, and then pour them over the bacon, making sure everything is evenly distributed in the pie dish. Add salt and pepper if you like. 
- Cover the top with pie crust. Brush with egg or a little melted butter. Bake for about 45 - 50 minutes (or until the pie crust is a nice golden brown).

Try not to eat the entire thing at once. 

We'll be making another one for Sunday, and I shall also be making my now-famous rainbow Spekkoek

I am incapable of making decisions.

FRIENDS, ROMANS, COUNTRYMEN, LEND ME YOUR EARS.

Or your eyes, I guess, as this is all words on a screen and not me actually verbally rambling. 

I HAVE FOUND AN APARTMENT. 

It's a really frigging nice one, too. Like it's not even an apartment, it's a house. Living room, kitchen, and closets downstairs, 2 bedrooms, full bathroom, and more closets upstairs. 

And they only want $725 per month, plus utilities.

So naturally, the moment the owner told me they had approved me as a possible tenant (ahead of the 3 other people interested in the place), I began second guessing myself.

I attempted to make a pros and cons chart, which is as follows:


I asked the property manager person about maintenance (as I do not want to get stuck in the same situation as last time), and she said there is someone on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only drawback is that they are nearly an hour away, which I don't see as much of a problem, since my last landlord was only 4 minutes away and yet nothing ever got fixed unless my life was in imminent danger. 

 I don't want to rush into a decision, but at the same time, places like this do not come on the market in Orange County very often, and when they do they get snatched up immediately. This house, for example--the property owners listed it on Monday, and already 4 people are in line to rent it. 

I think I just need some more xanax, and a few days to think. But WHAT SAY YOU out there reading? I've always thought it wise to get as many perspectives as possible when it comes to making large decisions. 


 On top of stressful decision making, I also apparently have a pinched nerve in my back, which requires physical therapy. And IT EFFING HURTSHope y'all are having a better week.






*The "neighbourhood" is comprised of a bunch of farms, a couple other little duplexy things like the one I want, and an itty bitty village with one pub and an antique book shop.

GUNS!

Hey y'all!

It's been a while. ......Again.

I had a WONDERFUL time in my travels through Kentucky. I have also fallen in love with the state of Kentucky and everyone in it. At least Western Kentucky, where we spent most of our time. Lil Bro #2 and I left on a Sunday morning and returned home the following Saturday night, splitting the actual driving over two days each way.

Some trip highlights:

We saw some really exciting road signs whilst driving through Ohio.





Once we got to Paducah, KY, I felt like an blundering fool every time I opened my mouth to speak to someone because they all talk fancy and I'm from New Jersey.

The second day there, we happened upon a moonshine distillery. While my brother took photos, I sampled everything they had, purchased some of their delicious wares,


and walked out rather less steadily than I had walked in.

Lil Bro#2 insisted on visiting every single antique shop in Paducah. I counted an absurd number of racist cookie jars.




I also somehow managed not to spend a ton of money and ended up buying only a book on the history of Paducah.

Our third day in Kentucky, we visited the Apple Valley Hillbilly Garden and Toyland, which JD Wilkes recommended. I think this might have been my favourite part of the whole trip. It is artwork constructed entirely out of bad puns, and it is hilarious. Keith the owner/artist is lovely, and even though it was kind of freezing out by the time we got there, he took the time to give us the full tour.

The next day we went exploring in the Land Between the Lakes, but couldn't see much as the roads were a bit too snowy for my car. Thursday we went to Nashville to visit Lil Bro#1. I bought new cowboy boots and a Stetson hat. Lil Bro#1 is there for a semester of nothing but music-making. His "school" is basically a giant stage with a very nice sound system and a bunch of recording studios, and all they do is make music and perform music. I'm jealous.

We sent a nice photo home to the parents.

I feel like a whale. I try to cover it up with clothing 2 sizes too large.

We left Paducah early Friday morning and drove to the Maker's Mark Distillery



Lil Bro#2, who does not drink, really wanted to go there. I obviously had no objections. It was a pretty cool place. When the zombie apocalypse happens, I will be there, behind the retaining wall I just built.

There was some really nice artwork in one part, a glass ceiling that ran the length of one hallway near the tasting room.


We got to taste whisky at the end of the tour.


Which is why Lil Bro#2 drove the rest of the way to the motel in West Virginia.

OMG YOU GUYS


Tudor's Biscuit World is like the greatest thing that ever happened. I'd move to West Virginia just for that.

Our final day of travelling was relatively uneventful, though we are now planning a day trip along Route 78 in Pennsylvania, because I have never seen so many bizarre roadside attractions in one place. (We will be ending at Weyerbacher, and Lil Bro#2 will be driving home.)
